Our partner Corporate Personal Wellbeing shares their tips for sticking to your New Years Resolutions!
The most popular resolutions are those connected with our wellbeing, followed by work and family. The most popular include;
– Doing more exercise or improving fitness
– Losing weight
– Saving more money
– Pursuing a career ambition
– Spending more time with family
Surveys suggest that 1 in 4 adults make New Year’s resolutions, and it’s fair to say that the results are mixed.
Understanding why we prefer to set goals at the beginning of the year could help us to stay on track!
Psychologists believe that we break our lives up into distinct stages rather than one continuous timeline. Life stages such as new jobs, having a child, or moving can be split into smaller sections such as years and these give us a ‘clean slate’ effect. This helps us distance ourselves from past perceived failures.
We tend to be more positive at the beginning of new stages. A positive view of the future tends to motivate action and influence others too.
There tend to be two types of resolutions. Avoidance and approach. One of the best ways to improve your chances of success is to turn your avoidance resolution into an approach one, often just by rephrasing it. So instead of trying to erase behaviour, like cutting out sweets and chocolate, reframe your goal to changing behaviour by focusing on eating more healthy food.
If you’re struggling – try using a Monday, or the first day of February to use the clean slate effect and get back on track!
Whatever happens, make a resolution. You have to be in it to win it.
